New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category

Those who have the skills, qualifications or experience to contribute to New Zealand's economic growth can apply for Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa.
The Skilled Migrant Category is a points based system, offering skilled individuals an opportunity to gain permanent residency in New Zealand.
The visa allows the visa holders to:

  • Live, work and study in New Zealand;
  • Include his/her partner and dependent children (aged 24 and under) in their residence application.

To be eligible to apply, candidate must be aged 55 or under and meet English language, health, and character requirements.
In order to apply, candidates first need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). These EOI profiles are then awarded points based on various factors such as applicant's age, work experience, qualifications and an offer of skilled employment.
Currently, the Immigration New Zealand is only selecting EOIs with 160 points or above.
Note: To claim points for qualification in their Expression of Interest, applicants may need to prove that their qualification is comparable to a recognized New Zealand Qualification and that it is of the required standard.

How the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa works

1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
Submit an EOI online where you can claim points for your qualifications, work experience, age and so on before submitting it to Immigration New Zealand. All EOIs received will be ranked from highest to lowest points and placed into a Pool.
2. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
Every fortnight Immigration New Zealand selects the EOIs with the highest point scores from the Pool. Candidates who have 160 points or more will be selected from the EOI pool and sent an invitation to apply (ITA) for a resident visa.
3. Submit a resident application
Candidates who receive an ITA then have to lodge their application for a Resident Visa with Immigration New Zealand. They also need to provide evidence for the point claims made in their EOI profiles by submitting all relevant documentation in the prescribed format.
4. Receive a resident visa
The successful candidates will be issued a resident visa by Immigration New Zealand.
